BREATHING THE ESSENTIAL BREATH
Rattling around in my old bones
I wonder what in the world can
keep me alive on the road ahead.
I heard if I join the Breathers of
the Sensory Awareness class on
Monhegan Island, I might extend
my longevity indefinitely.
But living without electricity and
plumbing doesn’t sound like fun.
I’ve been told to focus on my
breathing to stay alive—it gives
vitality to every part of my hungry
lungs, and will have me inhaling
and exhaling like a new-born baby.
If only I could discover the gift
of presence—I would harness
my breath to provide more life,
and more life for a lifetime.
